What is Synthetic Oil?
Wikipedia's Description: Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical compounds that are artificially made (synthesized). Synthetic lubricants can be manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather than whole crude oil, but can also be synthesized from other raw materials. Synthetic oil is used as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum when operating in extremes of temperature, because, in general, it provides superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils. Aircraft jet engines, for example, require the use of synthetic oils, whereas aircraft piston engines do not. Synthetic and petroleum oils differ greatly and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Synthetic lubricants are a product of engineers combining different chemicals and other compounds to produce what is called a base stock. At this point additives are combined with this base to make up a completed product. A big advantage of the synthetic process is, it is engineered to have exact size molecules making it a much more durable product. Petroleum is pumped from the ground and sent to a refinery and a fraction of each barrel is used for the automotive lubrication industry. As a result of refinement, the fraction used for lubricating oil, the equivalent petroleum base stock, is combined with other additives and a final product is ready for use. This is the process that has been used for quite some time and has served well, but the inherent nature of the weaker, irregularly sized molecule of the petroleum product has reduced durability. |
