I had a conversation with an acquaintance the other day who told me she had her oil changed every 3K because her mechanic said she would never have a problem if she maintained this routine. I had to counter her argument with some common sense and logic: No original equipment manufacturer in this country has recommended a 3K mile oil change for over 30 years. More than thirty years to be exact and the reasons are many. Lubrication base stock, additive technology and filtration have progressed. Along with engine metallurgy and design and computer controls which increase efficiency. And other innovations have led engineers to increase oil change intervals from 5K, 7.5K, and some as much as 10K miles when using a state of the art synthetic oil versus the old school petroleum oils and additives.
A mechanic or auto repair shop that recommends a 3K oil change in this day and age, special circumstances aside, is doing you a disservice at best and an absolute rip off at worse. It is true, if you did change the oil every 3K miles your engine would be in great shape, but using a high quality lubricant per the manufacturers change recommendation, will also keep your engine in great shape. Some shops will tell you the 3K change is so an inspection can be done to insure no other problems develop, which is true to some degree, but if your car is in good shape it is likely to stay in good shape. Periodic inspections are prudent. Most reputable shops and mechanics would be happy to check your oil.
My advice, use high quality lubricants and filtration. Naturally AMSOIL comes to mind. Have a reputable mechanic do a thorough yearly inspection, or inspect as per your owner’s manual schedule, and save time and money.
Enough with the 3K BS oil change scam. The state of California sued Jiffy lube recently for perpetuating 3K oil changes for the sole purpose of lining their pockets with your money.
